MALIK ROBERTS

TA: What’s your current hustle?

MR: I'm a painter.

TA: Describe the difference between your 9-5 and your 5-grind?

MR: Both my 9-5 and my 5-grind are kinda the same. for my 9-5 I'm an artist assistant for Domingo Zapata where I paint, maintain the studio, and help prep for shows. And for my 5-grind I go to @abxyles ( thats the studio/gallery I work out of) and just continue to paint till about 2am then start again the next day.

TA: Who gave you the most memorable career advice?

MR: My mentor Domingo Zapata once told me "you have to always move like an artist, talk like an artist, breathe like an artist, and never sell yourself short set your price and if they don't want to pay then fuck em."

TA: Has what you’re doing now been a life-long interest?

MR: Yeah, since I was a kid I was always drawing but I didn't really start painting till late 12th grade.

TA: Did you ever think you wouldn't make it to this point in your career? What kept you going?

MR: No, I never thought that. of course we have those moments where you think you not gunna make it but I'm really really really competitive at heart. so once I made the leap to decide to become an artist its a sink or swim kinda moment so I have to make it. also the support for my family and friends keeps your head above water, but I definitely knew I was gunna make it this point.

TA: If you could tell your younger self one thing about work ethic, what would it be?

MR: If your going to do something know that its going to reflect on you so don't half-ass it.

TA: What has been your favorite “project,” so far?

MR: I've only done one mural and it was in first street green art park in 2016. and the painting I did was a piece called porky the pig, which is a piece I did like a year before hand. it depicted a stereotype of a police officer because of the stereotypes the police was using to justify the killing of black and brown people. and I got such a great response for people and tourist and the scholastics school system asked me to be a judge for the gold key award for drawing and writing.

TA: Who are your 3 “must-follows” on Instagram?

MR: @love.watts @slimesunday @virgilabloh

TA: How would your inner circle describe your hustle?

MR: Constant.
